In my opinion, yes. Obtaining and getting through GI residency is not a cake walk, and attending share call which can often involve emergent procedures such as food impactions, emergent ERCP. I think heme onc offers a better lifestyle. But at the end of the day, you have to enjoy the subject matter to remain happy as an attending for decades.In conclusion, below are the aspects of a career in hematology/oncology that I find most enticing. 1. Working as the quarterback, coordinating patients' care across multiple specialties. 2. Training in two specialties during one fellowship program. 3. Treating both malignant AND benign conditions. 4.Heme/Onc is competitive, as well. It offers a better lifestyle, though, because there are few true emergencies where you're called in during the middle of the night. Don't know how competitive nephro is. Vast majority of private practice is a combo of heme/onc and a single board limits you greatly for jobs. If you would like an academic career in heme only may be worth considering, if I recall these 2 year fellowships are at very research heavy places as well. I would consider rheumatology as well.
