Sp20 wads.

Remington SP20 or SP20S Wads (or replacement... if there is any?) I'm wanting to load some 20ga #4 buck loads and have a Lyman #5 load book which calls for the SP20 wads. I have looked high and low for this wad and it's replacement SP20S to no avail! Does anyone know of a wad that I can substitute? The load in Lyman #5.Hodgdon's website has multiple recipes for AA HS and SP20 wad. Hodgdon lists 64 loads for 1oz 20ga in AAHS hulls. 9 loads with longshot and SP20 or AA20F1 wads. One with the BP SG20S and Win 572.Before ordering, I checked Recob's and they also had the Rem SP20 wads a bit cheaper. Since I already had a order started with Recob's, I ordered from them. 2000 wads was the 'sweet spot' for shipping for my order. The devil is always in the details. The trick is figuring out which ones that matter.

I have at least 1,ooo RP20 wads to use in the Winchester 20 AA. This is the only wad that works with the 1 1/8 oz. load without an excessive amount of wad pressure. I often use the "newer" Remington one piece 2 3/4 inch casing with 800-X powder and 1 1/8 oz. of shot. The load is listed in the 4th edition of the Lyman Shotshell Reloading book.

Be careful to use the same type of gas seal as the data you go by. The fiber wad should not significantly change the pressure. I have been using a 1 1/8 oz. load in the 20 gauge Remington SP "unibody" for many years. In the Lyman 3rd edition I believe. I use a Winchester 209 primer, SP20 wad, 16.0 grains of 800-X, and 1 1/8 oz. #6 shot (for pheasants - 2nd shot if needed). Hope this helps.

Unique is a very good powder for the 16 ga. reloader. I have loads W/ 15 gr. to 19 gr. using 7/8 oz to 1 1/8 oz of shot. PB is also a good powder for low pressure, low velocity 16 ga. loading with light shot packages. For 2 3/4" non toxic 20 ga loads, the straight walled hulls are the best. Fiocchi, Cheddite, Rio, Federal. You can get away with Bismuth in the Rem and Win hulls with the right powder and wads. I have destroyed a couple birds at 20 yards with them, and recovered one SP20 that broke and shuttlecocked with a lot of pellets in it. Not much left of that breast. I guess there are other 1 ounce wads out there but I am fine now with the 7/8 oz.
