I usually calculate based on the capital required to run the trade or the bpr. For example, the short put on a $6 stock might only require $250 in capital. So I use thay number instead of the entire collateral required. Different from return on risk though. ( total premium / total value of collateral ) * 100.

Or you can wait till expiry and collect the entire premium. If you want to do non theta gang strats and buy calls/puts then you would do buy to open.
