Okay so here’s the basic idea of armor in multiplayer. In order to play a character you must first have their armor. This means either crafting or finding (via chests or dragon) the base armor for that character. You’ll notice you start with three characters and 1 from a free chest. After you have the armor you can craft or find better armor.
