Hello all, I pulled my 2014 Jeep Patriot 2.0L out the other day, drove for about a mile, and all of the sudden the red lightning bolt light came on simultaneous to the Traction Control light. I then lost power, and my gas pedal seemingly had no effect on the tach. It hovered between 1-3k, alternating between the extremes there.Once in a blue moon I have seen these Jeeps get stuck with the controls, but usually on the steering wheel. I would first disconnect the negative battery cable for about 30 minutes or so, then plug it back in to see if the light goes away. It could also be a bad 4WD lock switch. Well, I had a different experience. I have an 08 JK with only 35,000 miles. I spent a week on the beach with Jeep in 4wd. I was on the way off the beach, and the ETC light comes on, and the throttle worked on its own, like it was on cruise control. I got back on the paved board, and into 2wd. 2006 Liberty 4x4 Part Time dash light stayed on in lever down 2WD after 4 wheeling. Tried taking it out and putting it back in 4WD and light still stayed on in 2WD. Backed up in 2WD for 60 feet then put it in N, shifted back into 4WD and back to 2WD. After several times moving the lever back and forth I noticed the light started to flicker.
As the name says these lights will flash (generally together but sometimes individually) without any known cause. The tire pressure is good, and the sentry keys/alarm function perfectly. This incidence usually happens while driving about 3x a week. The idiot lights stay lit for only about 10 seconds max, flash out, then come back on.

One way to tell whether the 4x4 is working or not is put it on jack stands, start it, put it in gear, see if the drive shaft to the rear wheels is spinning (it should be), then pull the 4x4 lock lever on the console and see if the rear wheels engage. .
