Maverick 88 vs remington 870.
The 590 also has a larger capacity (8/9+1 while a standard 500 is usually 5/6+1). This is great since the 500 can't add extensions to it without getting a new barrel and mag tube. This extra capacity may not matter much to some, but I like it. The downside to this is that it does make the gun more front heavy.

The 590 is anodized finish and a heavier duty receiver. Depends what features you like though. As in the safety position, pump lock location. etc...
A couple of things to add to your good explanation and comparison of the two shotguns. There is a left hand safety conversion available for the Remington 870 from a couple of suppliers.
