Project zomboid gas stations.
Each gas station has enough gas to (reportedly) last for about 50 in-game years. And there are a lot of gas stations. They power down when the power grid goes down, but that's solved by keeping a generator hooked up at the station you're using (turn it off when you leave tho). Don't worry about it.

To be clear: that's each individual pump, not the entire gas station. So a station with two pumps can have between 2,000 and 28,000 units of fuel, for example. Gas cans can hold 8 units of fuel each. This means that from a single fuel pump, you can refill a gas can anywhere from 125 to 1,750 times. Most gas stations have 2 or 4 pumps available.Still going strong on my longest lived character. If that’s not the issue maybe make sure the station has power still. Easy way to check is to run into the store and see if the refrigerators are running, and if they are you better go catch them! Vehicles can't directly access gas pumps (I know lol). You have to find an empty gas can and use that to pull fuel from pumps.

I feel the southern one might be a bit better because of the fishing + foraging one can do close-by. But, the northern one seems to have less zeds to deal with, and also seems easier to secure.
